Over The Garden Wall

About the Song

“Over the Garden Wall” is an unused track from the It’s Not The Coat Makes The Gentleman days. I believe I came across this one well into the recording sessions, and although I really liked the fun, lighthearted spirit of the lyrics and the 6/8, shuffle-like feel of the music, I decided that there were enough tracks already making the cut and that trying to squeeze in another one at the last minute was neither necessary or wise. Despite never having appeared in recorded form before, this song has been an absolute staple of my live Parlormuse performances, serving as a set opener (or co-opener, immediately following an instrumental) since the beginning. I’ve always found it to be a great, energetic way to kick things off and quickly convey the essence of what Parlormuse is all about. Despite its seemingly familiar sound, the solo instrumental line in this is actually not a Moog, Prophet, or any other synthesizer that most people might commonly consider “vintage.” It’s an ondes martenot, which dates all the way back to 1928.
