The Journey Begins

About the Song

[egg id=”3″]
Originally composed as part of a concept album based on the 1864 classic Jules Verne novel A Journey to the Centre of the Earth, this song earned an “Honorable Mention” nod in a 1988 national songwriters’ competition. Only three songs were completed for this album – between having to balance songwriting with a full college schedule and the demands of being enrolled in a music conservatory, I quickly decided to shelve the project. This would have been the second song on the album, following an unnamed overture-esque opening piece, and my intention was to convey the kind of anticipation that the bold adventurers in the original story might have felt while first embarking on their excursion. I always viewed the syncopated guitar line as being a kind of anchor on this, grounding the rest of the instruments and giving the song its momentum. This is definitely a pop song at heart, but you might be able to pick out elements of my progressive influences creeping in every now and again.
